Is Your Website Losing You Jobs?
The 40-point website checklist for contractors
A 10-minute website check, built for contractors
Most contractor websites lose calls in the same few places: a number you can't tap, no proof on the homepage, forms nobody checks. This checklist walks you through every one, in order of how much it costs you, so you know exactly what to fix first.
- 7 sections and 40 yes/no checks
- Trade-specific checks for your line of work
- Scoring guide and a "top 3 fixes" worksheet
- Printable - hand it to whoever runs your website
Ideal for HVAC, plumbing, roofing and commercial construction companies that want their website to bring in work, not just exist.
The checklist
Open your website on your phone, not your office computer, and tick Yes only if the answer is clearly yes. "Sort of" counts as no.
1. First 5 seconds6 checks
When someone lands on your homepage, they decide almost immediately whether to stay or call the next company.
- The headline says what you do and where"Emergency Plumbing in Dallas & Fort Worth", not a slogan like "Quality You Can Trust."
- Your phone number is visible without scrolling, on phone and desktop
- On a phone, tapping the number starts a call
- There is one obvious main button above the fold"Call Now", "Get a Free Quote" or "Book Service".
- The site looks currentNo stock photos of models in hard hats, no old copyright year, no broken images.
- A stranger can tell what you do, where, and how to contact you in 5 seconds
2. Mobile & speed6 checks
- The site loads in under 3 seconds on mobile data, not office Wi-Fi
- Text is readable without zooming and buttons are easy to tap with a thumb
- The call button stays visible while scrolling on mobile
- No pop-ups cover the page before visitors see your services
- Your quote form is easy to fill in on a phone - 5 fields or fewer
- The site scores 90+ (or close) on Google PageSpeed Insights for mobileFree to check at pagespeed.web.dev.
3. Trust & proof7 checks
People are letting you into their home or trusting you with a large job. They look for proof before they call.
- Real Google reviews, with names and star rating, appear on the homepage
- License numbers and insurance/bonding are shown clearly, ideally in the footer
- You show real photos of your team, trucks and completed jobs
- Certifications, manufacturer partnerships or associations appear as badges
- There is at least one before/after or project example with a short description
- Years in business or jobs completed is stated with a specific number
- Any guarantee or warranty you offer is written out plainly
4. Getting the lead6 checks
- Every service page has a call button and a quote form
- Your form tells people what happens next"We'll call you back within 1 business hour."
- You've submitted your own form in the last 30 days and the lead arrived
- Form leads trigger an instant text or email to whoever responds
- Business hours and after-hours/emergency options are clearly stated
- You offer at least one option besides calling - form, text, booking or chat
5. Getting found on Google7 checks
- Each main service has its own page instead of one long "Services" page
- You have pages for the main areas you serve, each with genuinely local content
- Your Google Business Profile is verified, links to your site and has recent photos
- Your name, address and phone number are identical everywhere they're listed
- Each page has a unique title that includes the service and location
- Your site has an FAQ answering the questions customers ask on the phone
- The site uses HTTPS - no "Not secure" warning in the address bar
6. Ownership & upkeep5 checks
The problems nobody notices until something breaks.
- You - not a former employee or agency - own the domain name
- You have the logins for your website, hosting and domain, stored safely
- You know who to contact if the site goes down, and they respond within a day
- Analytics are set up and you can see how many calls and forms the site produced
- Services, team, prices mentioned and service area are accurate as of today
That's 37 checks. The PDF adds Section 7 - three checks specific to HVAC, plumbing, roofing or commercial construction - plus the scoring guide and a "top 3 fixes" worksheet. Get the checklist

FAQ
How long does the checklist take?
About 10 minutes. Do it on your phone, since that's how most customers see your site.
Do I need technical knowledge?
No. Every check is something you can see or test yourself. The one tool it mentions, Google PageSpeed Insights, is free and needs only your web address.
What's a good score?
34 or more out of 40 means your website is doing its job. Between 24 and 33 it's likely leaking calls, and under 24 it's probably sending customers to competitors.
Should I fix my current website or build a new one?
If most of your "No" answers are about proof, lead capture or local pages, fixing is usually enough. If you're failing the first-impression, mobile and speed checks, a rebuild is often faster and cheaper than patching.
Is this only for residential contractors?
No. The first six sections apply to any contractor, and the trade-specific section includes checks for commercial construction and general contractors.
